Workshop Outline
Placement provides a valuable opportunity for students in vocational and professional education and training (VPET) to gain practical workplace experience and enrich their learning experiences. Nonetheless, students are freshmen in the workplace and they may encounter different challenges. How could VPET teachers support their students during placement? This workshop will discuss the needs of placement students, introduce a coaching model and coaching skills; and explore how VPET teachers could support and supervise placement students with success.
On completion of this workshop, the participants would be able to:
- describe the characteristics and needs of placement students;
- explain the GROW coaching model and coaching skills; and
- discuss the application of coaching model in supporting and supervising the placement students.

Innovative Pedagogical Strategies in VPET Series
Innovative Pedagogical Strategies in VPET Series is funded by the Quality Enhancement Support Scheme (QESS) on the project of “Development of Effective Pedagogical Practices and a Cross-institutional Online Sharing Platform for Hong Kong's Vocational Education and Training (VET)”. It offers seminars and workshops on a regular basis to keep VPET academic and teaching staff, workplace mentors and VPET stakeholders abreast of the most updated flexible learning, innovative pedagogical practices, competency-based and task-oriented instructional strategies. It also serves the purpose of enhancing peer learning between institutions’ academic and teaching staff and workplace mentors to maximise support to students during their workplace learning and industrial attachment.
