About the Seminar
Educational usages of e-books, streaming videos, podcasts, social networking,
cloud computing, and many other mobile applications have been adopted by individuals and innovative educators and institutions around the world. In addition to the mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones, there are emerging technologies such as wearable devices, holographic, 3-D printing, internet-of-things and other fascinating possibilities.
To scale up innovative potential of mobile and emerging technologies, there is a pressing need to harness research studies with a solid theoretical underpinning, and empirically validated practical recommendations to inform pedagogical strategies and policies.
In this seminar, Professor Daniel Churchill will examine mobile and emerging technologies and their educational affordances articulated through research studies, and make recommendations for curriculum and learning design for 21st century learning.
The seminar will be conducted in English.
Seminar Aims
This seminar aims to
- introduce emerging technologies and how these might create opportunities for learning;
- present a learning design as an approach to participants’ instructional planning; and
- encourage participants to review and revise their own curriculum to incorporate concept learning and 21st century skills.
Target Participants
Academic and teaching staff from vocational and professional education and training (VPET) institutions and higher education institutions, VPET workplace mentors, VPET stakeholders, and interested members of the public are welcome.
Free admission on a first-come-first-served basis.
About the Speaker
Professor Daniel Churchill is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. He specialises in educational technology, education system development and multimedia design. Over the years, he has been active in researching topics including learning 2.0, mobile learning, e-learning instructional design, learning objects, and teacher professional development. He is a recipient of the prestigious “HKU Outstanding Teacher Award,” and the "Macromedia's Award for the Best Multimedia on the Internet.”

Innovative Pedagogical Strategies in VPET Series
Innovative Pedagogical Strategies in VPET Series is funded by the Quality Enhancement Support Scheme (QESS) on the project of “Development of Effective Pedagogical Practices and a Cross-institutional Online Sharing Platform for Hong Kong's Vocational Education and Training (VET)”. It offers seminars and workshops on a regular basis to keep VPET academic and teaching staff, workplace mentors and VPET stakeholders abreast of the most updated flexible learning, innovative pedagogical practices, competency-based and task-oriented instructional strategies. It also serves the purpose of enhancing peer learning between institutions’ academic and teaching staff and workplace mentors to maximise support to students during their workplace learning and industrial attachment.
